National Role and Mandate

PetroSA, officially the National Petroleum, Gas and Oil Corporation of South Africa, serves as the country’s national oil company. It owns, operates, and manages the South African government’s commercial petroleum assets and supports innovation in energy sustainability and technological excellence.

Registered in January 2002 as a commercial, non-listed entity, PetroSA operates across two global business streams: Oil & Gas Exploration and Production, and the Manufacturing and Marketing of Synthetic Fuels and Petrochemicals.

PetroSA contributes to South Africa’s energy security, economic growth, and global competitiveness through responsible resource management and environmental stewardship.

Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) Technology

Turning Gas into Ultra-Clean Fuels

PetroSA is an internationally recognised pioneer in Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technology — a process that converts natural gas into ultra-clean liquid fuels. The company operates a major commercial GTL refinery in Mossel Bay, Western Cape.

Mossel Bay Refinery

Produces synthetic fuels and petrochemical products from offshore gas, supplying approximately 7% of South Africa’s liquid-fuel needs.

Environmental Responsibility

The GTL process is recognised for environmentally responsible production, reduced emissions and clean fuels.

Innovation in Synthetic Fuels

What PetroSA Produces

PetroSA produces a wide range of fuels and specialty chemicals — from anhydrous alcohols to synthetic petroleum fuels — exported globally and contributing more than R500 million annually in foreign revenue.

Fuel Production

Supplies synthetic fuels to leading oil companies who distribute under their own brand names across South Africa.

Speciality Chemicals

Produces speciality fuels and alcohols for industrial applications and exports, supporting diversification.

Sable Oil Field

The Sable Oil Field, approximately 150 km south of Mossel Bay, provides around 17% of South Africa’s oil needs.
