Overview

The Mineral Regulation Branch, led by the Deputy Director-General (Mineral Regulation Management), oversees the administration and regulation of South Africa’s mineral and mining sector. Its mission is to promote economic growth, job creation, transformation, and sustainable development through effective regulation and governance.

The branch is responsible for the administration of prospecting rights, mining rights, permits, and environmental compliance in accordance with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), Act 28 of 2002, as amended.

Directorate: Empowerment Transactions

Transformation & Inclusive Participation

The Directorate: Empowerment Transactions ensures the achievement of meaningful transformation and inclusive participation in the mining and minerals industry. It evaluates and monitors Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) compliance and ownership transactions in alignment with national transformation objectives.

Directorate: Mineral and Petroleum Titles Registration Office (MPTRO)

Titles Registration & Legal Security

The MPTRO administers the registration of mineral and petroleum titles and other ancillary transactions as per the MPRDA. It ensures legal security and transparency in title ownership.
