The DMPR provides strategic leadership and oversight for South Africa’s minerals and petroleum sectors. Guided by the vision of inclusive growth, sustainability, and economic transformation, the Ministry is committed to ensuring that all South Africans benefit equitably from the country’s natural resources.

The Minister and Deputy Minister work collaboratively with key stakeholders — including industry, communities, and international partners — to ensure effective governance, accountability, and innovation in the regulation and development of the mining and petroleum industries.

Mr. Gwede Mantashe

Mr. Mantashe was appointed Minister of Mineral Resources in February 2018. Following the 6th democratic elections in 2019, and with the expansion of the Ministry to include Energy, he was appointed as the Minister of Mineral and Energy Resources in May 2019.

Personal Information:
Mr. Samson Gwede Mantashe was born on 21 June 1955 in Lower Cala, Eastern Cape. He began his activism in the Student Christian Movement (SCM) and has served the mining industry through various leadership roles.

Ms. Phumzile Mgcina

Ms. Phumzile Mgcina was appointed as Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources to support the strategic and operational leadership of the Department. She is dedicated to driving inclusivity, transformation, and innovation within the mineral and petroleum value chains, ensuring meaningful participation of women and youth.
