Recognise achieving high standards of safety in the South African mining industry

The Mine Health and Safety Council Award Scheme replaced the Minerals Council South Africa (previously the Chamber of Mines) competition scheme in January 2000.

HOW TO REGISTER TO PARTICIPATE

Any operational mine in South Africa can participate in this award scheme. Mines wishing to participate in the award scheme must be in continuous operation for the qualifying period. The qualifying shifts commences from the date of registration with the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate. These mines are advised to familiarise themselves with the booklet.

An operational mine can participate in only one of the two main categories of scheme namely:

  • Million Fatality free Shifts [Millionaire's Award]
  • Thousand Fatality-Free Production Shifts Award

To register to participate in the award scheme, complete the registration form and submit the completed form to the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate.

Any decision regarding the award scheme is vested with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. In events where a participating mine wishes to appeal against any such decisions, the matter will be referred to the Mine Health and Safety Council [MHSC].

What are reports of labour and shifts?

Operational mines participating in the award scheme are required to submit a monthly report. These reports are called a reports of labour and shifts and it should be submitted for each participating entity within the registered operational mine. Reports on labour and shifts should be submitted by no later than the 10th day of each month to the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate

There is a report on labour and shifts for each category, namely:

  • The report on labour and shifts for the Million Fatality Free Shifts which is based on fatality free shifts. Fatality free shifts are man shifts and operate on the total labour that physically worked on the participating mine for the reporting month.
  • The report on labour and shifts for the Thousand Fatality Free Production Shifts does not count the number of employees but counts the total number of production shifts worked per day on the operation.
