The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources hereby announces the adjustment of fuel prices based on current local and international factors with effect from the 2nd of September 2026.

The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources hereby announces the adjustment of fuel prices based on current local and international factors with effect from the 2nd of September 2026.

 

South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted monthly, informed by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs, e.g., shipping costs.

 

The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments are as follows:

 

  1. Crude oil prices

The average Brent Crude oil price increased from 82.37 US Dollars (USD) to 87.85 USD during the period under review. The increase is due to the continued US/Iran tensions, uncertainty regarding the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and higher shipping costs.

  1.   International petroleum product prices

The average international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin increased due to supply shortages caused by continued Russia/Ukraine conflict and lower global inventories of products. These factors led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices (BFP) of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 127.79 cents per litre (c/l) 321.29 c/l and 239.06 c/l, respectively. The prices of Propane and Butane increased during the period under review.

  1.   Rand/US Dollar exchange rate

The Rand appreciated on average against the US Dollar (from 16.46 to 16.26 Rand per USD) during the period under review when compared to the previous one. This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and Illuminating Paraffin by 21.07 c/l, 29.06 c/l and 26.69 c/l respectively.

 

  1.   Implementation of the Slate Levy

The cumulative slate amounted to a negative balance of R9.519 billion for petrol and diesel of at the end of July 2026. In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the slate levy of 83.28 c/l will be implemented in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from the 2nd of September 2026. The Slate Levy has increased by 21.90 c/l from 61.38 to 83.28 c/l.

 

  1. Annual Wages Adjustment for the Forecourt Staff 

The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has approved a 4.9 c/l increase (from 315.1 c/l to 320.0 c/l), in the price structures of petrol to accommodate the wage increase for Forecourt employees, in line with the Motor Industry Bargaining Council (MIBCO) multi-year Wage Settlement Agreement signed on the 23rd of August 2025. This increase will be implemented from the 2nd of September 2026.

 

  1. The Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP) for LPGas that is imported through the Port of Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape province.

The Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP) and the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of LPGas that is imported through the Port of Saldanha Bay will be R1516,309 per metric ton and R36.60 per kilogram, respectively, effective from the 2nd of September 2026.

 

 

 

 

 

Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for September 2026 will be adjusted as follows:

      1. Both grades of Petrol 93 and 95 (ULP & LRP): One hundred and twenty-nine cents per litre (129.00 c/l) increase.
      2. Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Two hundred and ninety-three point nine cents per litre (293.90 c/l) increase.
      3. Diesel (0.005% sulphur):  Three hundred and fourteen point nine cents per litre (314.90 c/l) increase.
      4. Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): Two hundred and thirteen cents per litre (213.00 c/l) increase.
      5. SMNRP for IP:  Two hundred and eighty-four cents per litre (284.00 c/l) increase.
      6. Maximum Retail Price of LPGas: Sixty-nine cents per kilogram (69.00 c/kg) increase and seventy-nine cents per kilogram (79.00 c/kg) increase in the Western Cape.

 

The fuel prices schedule for the different Magisterial District Zones (MDZ) will be published on Tuesday, the 2nd of September 2026.
