Mr. Gwede Mantashe

Mr Mantashe was appointed Minister of Mineral Resources in February 2018. Following the 6th democratic elections in 2019, and with the expansion of the Ministry to include Energy, he was appointed as the Minister of Mineral and Energy Resources in May 2019 where he currently serves.

Personal Information

Mr Samson Gwede Mantashe was born on 21 June 1955 in Lower Cala, in the former Transkei (Eastern Cape). He began his activism in the Student Christian Movement (SCM).

Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources of South Africa.

Academic Qualifications

Holds a Bachelor of Commerce (1997) and Honours (2002) from UNISA, and a Master’s degree from Wits (2008). Currently pursuing an MBA through MANCOSA.

Career Highlights

Began in mining sector (1975), co-founded NUM Witbank branch, later became General Secretary. Served in Ekurhuleni Municipality and on Samancor board. Held leadership roles in DBSA, SACP, and ANC, including Secretary General and National Chairperson.

Ms. Phumzile Mgcina was appointed as Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources to support the strategic and operational leadership of the Department. She is dedicated to driving inclusivity, transformation, and innovation within the mineral and petroleum value chains, ensuring meaningful participation of women and youth.
