South Africa has called for stronger energy cooperation, increased investment and expanded regional refining capacity to strengthen Africa’s energy security, accelerate industrialisation and create jobs. The call was made at the 8th Meeting of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO) National Oil Companies (NOC) CEOs’ Forum, held in Cape Town on the sidelines of African Energy Week 2026.

We gather at a critical moment for our continent and the world. Geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global energy markets continue to place significant pressure on our economies and our people.
The Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Ms Phumzile Mgcina will lead the DMPR delegation at the Africa Energy Week (AEW) conference, taking place from 12-16 October 2026 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town. The AEW 2026 is convened under the theme: “Invest in African Energies: Affordable and Abundant Energy Additions”. The theme highlights the importance of accelerating investment, innovation and strategic partnerships to unlock Africa’s energy potential and expand access to affordable, reliable and abundant energy.
As we come to the end of this year’s Joburg Indaba, I would like to reflect on the state of the industry and, more importantly, on what we must do to unlock its next phase of growth. I want to focus on four pillars that we believe are fundamental to the future of mining in South Africa: exploration, value addition, skills development, and market diversification.

The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe, visits Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM) in the Matzikama Local Municipality, Western Cape, on Friday, 2 October 2026. The visit forms part of government’s work to develop South Africa’s critical mineral resources, expand local beneficiation and strengthen mineral value chains that support industrialisation, investment, skills development and job creation.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has noted recent media reports concerning the litigation involving the Bapedi Kingdom, Samancor Chrome Ltd and rehabilitation activities on the Wintersveld and Jagdlust farms in Limpopo. The Department wishes to place the current position on record and clarify certain aspects of the proceedings and its role in the matter.
We meet here exactly two years after our last Mine Health and Safety Tripartite Summit, during which we assessed the state of the mining industry in terms of health and safety, and mapped out a path towards the attainment of Zero-Harm. Despite challenges, since our last meeting, the industry has recorded progress. In 2024 alone, the industry recorded 42 fatalities, marking the lowest fatalities in the history of South African mining. This record was further improved in 2025, with 41 fatalities.
This year’s Summit is particularly significant as we mark 30 years of the existence of the Mine Health and Safety Council. This milestone provides us with an important opportunity to reflect on the journey we have travelled together, the progress we have made, the knowledge we have generated, and the lessons we have learned in our collective pursuit of safer and healthier mines.

International Literacy Day is an important occasion on the global calendar because it reminds us that literacy is fundamental to human dignity, individual empowerment, and sustainable s ocioeconomic development.

The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe, will on Friday, 14 August 2026, undertake a community outreach programme in his parliamentary constituency of Dannhauser, KwaZulu-Natal, where he will hand over 200 gas handy cookers and cylinders to community members. The support, provided through Gold Fields, forms part of the Minister’s outreach programme and is intended to assist vulnerable households during the winter season. It also reflects the importance of partnerships between government and the mining sector in contributing to the development and wellbeing of communities.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has noted reports of an incident involving the deaths of illegal miners in Nkaneng, Rustenburg, in the North West Province, on 10 August 2026. The Department extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends and communities affected by this tragic incident. The loss of life is deeply regrettable, and the DMPR recognises the serious impact such events have on affected communities.
The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources hereby announces the adjustment of fuel prices based on current local and international factors with effect from the 5th of August 2026. South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted monthly, informed by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs, e.g., shipping costs.
